FIRE BRIGADES
ANNUAL CONFERENCE,
Press Association. DUNEDIN, March 12. The annual conference of the United Piro Brigades’ Association was opened at Balclutho. The report stated that the excess of assets over liabilities was £392 14s 7d, against £575 10s 4d last year. The membership is now 135 brigades. Out of less than 3000 members 1030 have enlisted and 87 have been killed and 116 wounded. The conference decided to appoint a deputation to wait on tho Minister for Internal Affairs urging that further efforts bo mads to obtain financial assistance from (insurance companies towards the upkeep of all brigades, whether under fire boards or not. It was decided to bring before the National Efficiency Board the question of assisting the Government in the enlistment of eligible members without unduly weakening the strength of brigades. A motion was carried disapproving of any brigade superintendent appealing for the exemption of any member eligible for active service.
