Tho offerings of wheat in tho local market, which were plentiful up to about the end of last week, have eased off a good deal and business lias been slacker in consequence. Most of the parcels that have changed hands were quitted at the maximum Government prices, but sales have also been made at lower rates for samples which wore lower grade. The demand for oats still continues! hut offerings are very scarce indeed. Moderate business in potatoes is reported and prices have eased a little. FRUIT AND PRODUCE AVELLINGTON MARKETS. Tho apple season js now at its height for varieties which are in season at tnis time of the year, and as a result values ruling j.re at a reasonable level from a buyer’s point of view. Gravensteins are most in demand and command higher rates than other descriptions; cooking apples have undergone a distinct decline in price, supplies arriving being excessive. Tomatoes have again declined in value, and prices ruling are unprofitable. Mostly every line of stone fruit is in strong demand, hut as consignments coming forward aro heavy extreme rates are prevented from existing. Cape gooseberries are keenly sought after; greengages are in- poor supply and selling exceedingly well; pears have declined in price, the William Boa Cretien being principally in evidence. The next shipment of bananas will face a keen market, owing to the absence of the usual monthly supply from the Cook Group. Apples, choice dessert 7s 6d to Ss case, prime 8s 6d to 7s, unpopular varieties 5s 9d to 6s, cookers, choice large 3s 6d to 4s, prime 3s to 3s 3d; Cape gooseberries, 3d to Od lb; pears, choice dessert 3s 6d to 4s half-case, prime 2s 6d to 3s; tomatoes, choice 3s to 3s 6d halfcase, prime Is 9d to 2a 3d; nectarines, choice 5o to 5s 6d half-case, prime 4s to 4s Gd; peaches, choice 5s to 5s Gd half-case, prime 3s 6d to 4s; plums, dark -is 6d to ss, others 3s to 3s 6d; greengages, choice 7s fid to 8s half-case; passions, 2s 6d box; lemons (local), 8s to 9a case. POTATOES AND ONIONS. The local market for potatoes underwent a distinct advance last week, but values have since declined. There is always a special demand for any particularly prime fresh samples. Operations have been made lately in South Island potatoes for forward delivery. At the same time it would not be surprising to see a weaker market existing in regard to same before long. Auckland onions aro meeting the demand; at the moment there is a strong inquiry, and satisfactory prices aro ruling. Potatoes, prime 9s to 10s cwt, others 7s to 7s 6d; onions, 7s to 7s 6d cwt. OTHER VEGETABLES. Lettuce has taken a decided advance in price during the past lew days, and extreme rates are ruling. Parsnips, cauliflowers and green peas are all m keen demand. Cauliflowers, choice 9s to lls sack, prime 6s 6d to 7s 6d; cabbages, choice o. aa to 3s sack, prime Is 6d to 2s; parsnips, choice 8s to 3s 9d sack, prime fo 6d to 7s; pumpkins, prime 4s to 4s 9d sack; carrots, prime 4s to 5s sack, 'good 3s to 3s 6d: French beans, prime 6s Gd to 8s 6d half-sack; swedes 3s sack; beetroot, 4s to 5s sack; cucumbers. 4s tofocaafi - EGGS. Supplies continue short of requirements with 2s ruling generally for fresh and 2s Id for special brands. AVELLINGTON CUSTOMS.
