He was honorary starter to the Canterbury Jockey Club in 1871, and while in New Zealand acted for that club until 1890. Mr Campbell was also known as a rider, and in the early seventies won a match for .£IOO a-side over hurdles. Mr Campbell was an enthusiastic lover of boxing and wrestling, and both witnessed and officiated at many memorable contests. -• ■ "
