PUBLIC TELEPHONES
THEIR MISUSE. CITY COUNCIL'S ATTITUDE. At last night’s meetincr of the City Council the by-laws committee reported that representatives of the committee' conferred with the Post and Telegraph Department officials in connection with the public stand telephones in consequence of complaints as to the use of these instruments by unauthorised persons. The committee’s representatives have reported as follows:
1. That the Poet and Telegraph Department adopts the committee’s interpretation of the agreement for the use of public stand telephones. . S, That the department. is dissatisfied with the manner in which the telephones are used by the general public. 3. The department threaten to discontinue' the present system and adopt tho toll system or charge larger annual fees.
4. That they have instructed the city engineer to use all, expedition. possible to have cabinets for those stand telephones not provided with houses at present, and all cabin doors shall have springs fitted’ small bells erected outside, and the word "private” painted on each cabinet.
The committee have recommended that a Circular letter be forwarded to each licensed driver using public stands, conveying the information outlined above, with the object of having tho complaints rectified. The report was adopted.
