HOSPITAL BOARD

DEFAULTING CONTRACTORS TO BE PUNISHED. The Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board met yesterday, when there were present: Messrs H. Baldwin (chairman), B. G. H. Burn, F. Castle, D. Campbell. W. Galloway, J. W. AlcEwan, F. T. Aloore, G. Nash, J. Smith, W. H. Thompson, Rev. H. Van Staveren, Mrg T. AI. Wilford, and Airs A. AlcVlcar. The charitable aid committee reported ; That the cost of the new isolation ward at tho Ohiro Home was £525 16s Bd. Unexpected difficulties in constructing the gas, water and drainage services arising from the remoteness of the site added some £SO tp the cost. That the expenditure on out-door and indoor relief for the half-year ended September 30th was £3007 against the estimate of £36X7, being thus £609 below the latter. Compared with last year the figures are £3007 against £3860, showing a decrease of £852. The report was adopted.

Air F. T. Moore, according.to notice, moved as follows: “That no goods b® purchased or tender for same accepted from any firm that has failed to properly execute a military contract." The mover referred in strong terms to firms that had been guilty, of breach of contract. The board should have no dealings with firms that had, been guilty of conduct Tike that of Scoullar and Co., who had been found gnilty of supplying short-weight mattresses for the soldiers. Some of the directors of that company were also directors of a firm that had been guilty of putting make-weights into pepper, spices, and coffee. He hoped no member of the board would allow- any personal regard for any director of such companies to influence him.

1 Atre AlcTicar: “Is this for all time.?”

Air Aloore: “Yes, for all time.” Airs AlcVicar then seconded the motion which was carried without discussion and without dissent.
