FIXTURES

November 23 and 25 —South. Canterbury J.C. Spring. _ , T n November 25 and 29— Takapuna J.C. Spring. t November 29 and 30 —Hororata *\.c. Annual.

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “Tohunga.")

Tho South Canterbury Jockey Club will hold its meeting to-day at Masiidyko, and if tho size of the fields counts ior anything the mooting should bo a most success! ul one.

Tho smallest field is in the Hurdles, only half a dozen jumpers having been paid up for. The top weight ;s Boro til.9). Compulsion should bo able to carry bis fist round the course without making a fuss. Kingsway (9.13) may run. into a place. Several competitors at Riccarton figure in the Trial Hack Handicap of five furlongs. Asoalaphus (8.0) was well supported in a hack event at Riccarton, but be failed to rim on, although he was up in tho van at tho beginning. Finless may carry the 9st over the journey, and Kilkcc should be, annexing a stake before long,_ There are several fair sprinters in that race. Tiio acceptance for, tho Jockey Club Handicap numbers eight, but the field is by no means a strong one from _ a quality point of view. On paper Killena appears to be the best in at tho weights. She lias been allotted 7.6, and, on her running in the N.Z. Oaks (second to Devotion) she should do well over the mile. Oxenhope proved at Riccarton that he' was in good form, and with 912 ho may be dangerous. Rmgform (8.12) shaped none too well at tho Cup meeting, and he now has a chance to make amends. One dozen horses are set down to contest tho President’s Welter ot seven furlongs. The imported mare Week-End (5.13) should have a lot of friends. She has been rather disappointing of late, and should bo turning up soon. There is no doubt as to her pace. Placid, who is in at the minimum: Sst, should also be well supported, and the top weight. Yes, will no doubt command a Jot of respect. Deviation (8.7) looks as well as anything in tho Korrytown Welter, run over a milo. British Rose (8.13) has not been handicapped out of the race, and Golden Rupee 0-10) has a reputation in the fax South.

Oxenhopo also figures in tho Flying Handicap of six furlongs, but ho will most likely bo found contesting the milo race. If.ho is withdrawn it will leave Findhorn at tho head of affairs with 8.13, not a prohibitive weight. Ardmore (8.3) and Bon (7.13) will doubtless be well supported.

The Spring Stakes has a mixed field of fifteen, Masterstroke holding pride of place with 8.10. Bellfock (8.7) and The White King (8.7) may keep tho others moving.

All of the horses (barring The Finn and Minuet) in the Spring Stakes, appear in the Shorts Handicap, so that the pen will probably be used freely in one event or the other. Masterstroke will carry 8-7, ff started, and should rUn a good race over the five furlongs. Garetta has a Southland reputation. and Kilkeo has yet to win a race.

Meltcbikoff, who has been in the hands of W. McDonald, at Riccarton, is to bo removed to Ellerslio for training. His owner, who races as “C. Machell,” was said to have removed his residence to the northern city some time ago, but he denied the assertion. Meltcbikoff is engaged at the Auckland Cup meeting, and should bo worth watching.

Bimetor, Clavorhouse, Full Speed, and San Sebastian will represent Riccarton at the Feilding fixture. The Auckland Racing Club paid tax to the Government to the extent of £3126 over the spring meeting. Murray Hobbs has engaged accommodation for eight hprsts at Ellerslio. Included in that number would be the TV. G. Stead string.

Merry Roe is said to bo very sore since returning to Ellerslio after her Wellington and Riccarton exertions. Her trainer will have a hard task to get her ready for the Auckland Christmas meeting.

Devotion, who cracked up on tho track at Trentham last week, is making good progress, and tho filly is now out of all danger. Miss Deval is still suffering from tho enlarged hock which was consequent upon a kick received during tho Wellington meeting. Something in the nature of a breeding curiosity is reported from the Ascot Stud Farm. On October 2nd Mr G. D. Greenwood’s imported mare Adra foaled a dead colt, and then twelve days later, October 14th, foaled* a livo colt which is still living. It seldom falls to the lot of ono stud to send up the winners of big races in successive seasons, but Mr J. F. Buchanan’s Kinloch. Stud at Little River has earned that distinction. In 1014 tlie yearlings from Kinloch included a Martian colt who, as Ardenvohr, was destined to win tho New Zealand Cup this year. The following year there was another Martian colt in the Kinloch yearlings, and Mr W. G. Stead bought him for 400 guineas. On November 11th this Martian colt, who is now a three-year-old gelding, iron the Melbourne Cup. An Australian writer, “Chiron,” reminds us that although Sasanof was bred in tho Dominion, much of the blood in his pedigree is of Australian origin. Ho traces back to the imported marc Levity, bred at tho famous Middle Bark Stud, by Mr Blenkiron in 1860. Levity was brought to South Australia by Mr John Baker, tho father of the lato Sir Richard Baker, and was ono of the crack brood mares in bis stud. She was mated with Lucifer (son of Gemma di Vcrgy), and her first foal was Don Giovanni, and tho following year she missed. Then, in 1869, she bred Don Juan, who was one of the most noted members of the family Levity founded, as ho won the Melbourne Cup in 1873.
