OVERSEAS PARLIAMENTARIANS
BANQUET AT LANCASTER HOUSE A SPEECH BY SIR JAMBS CARROLL. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received August 1, 10 p.m.) LONDON, August 1. Mr Asquith presided at a Government banquet to the overseas Parliamentarians at Lancaster House. _ . . . There was a big attendance of statesmen and o-hers, including the Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Islington, and the High Commissioners. Mr Asquith, feferring to the Parliamentarians’ visits to the British front and the fleet, said:—“Your visit was opportune. After long stagnation, operations have taken a decisive turn. It is a great moment for us, though there has been no change in qualities, in strategical skill, tactical adroitness, and individual courage. You have seen the actual realities of war. Few of your fellow-citizens have had the same privileges. Therefore, tako the Mother Country’s message to her children and kindred, that vast and terrible as is the ordeal of war, Britain and the Dominions have been called to take their stand in a supreme struggle for freedom and justice. The blood we are shedding side by side has meant new life and the promise of an immortal future for the Imperial household.” Sir James Carroll, in replying, said that no Ministry had ever been confronted with more tremendous issues. “The Dominions hope you will remember their views upon tho affairs of the Empire, and act rightly in finding a tangible solution.”
