DAMAGE TO KOMATA
FOUR NEW PLATES REQUIRED.
Work is being continuously carried on repairing the Union Oo.’s steamer Komata on the Wellington patent slipThere are two shifts, and the busy clang of.the hammers never ceases. A thorough examination of the Komata on Saturday showed that lour new plates will have to he inserted on the starboard side, and other plates will have to be patched up. There are two big holes in the vessel’s hull, one on each side of the keek There are a few smaller holes and cracks. A piece of hard rock, about twice the size of a large loaf of bread, has been extracted from one of the holes. The floorplates, inside the vessel, over the places where the hull has been damaged, are “set up,” but none of the bulkheads are affected. It is estimated that the repairing work will occupy about a fortnight. A large number of people went round to the patent slip yesterday to view the damaged vessel.
