Mr Roland Foster, who came to Australia with Madame Clara Butt and Mr Eennorley Rumford on their last tour, and has since become well known as a vocal' teacher in Sydney, has been appointed professor of singing at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music, Sydney, under the directorship of Mr Henri Verbrug ghen. . ' Mr E. B. Picknell, an bid and respected resident of Onehunga, passed away on Thursday at the ago of 77 years. He was a well-known figure on the road for a very long periodl until a few years .ago when he , retired from the business of a public earner. Tbe deceased, who settled in Onohunga forty years ago, leave# three daughters and two sons. The Rev. Louis Webb,, of Kalgoorlie, West Australia, has arrived in Auckland, and intends to proceed to Wellington to enlist , for active service. He is a eon of Mr, Joseph M. Webb, of Tauranga, whom ho- will visit before enlisting. Mr Webb was formerly a student of King s College, and has been in Australia during the past fourteen years. Private William C. Price, who wm reported missing,- now by Court of Inquiry believed to ho dead, left with the main body of th© Now Zealand Expeditionary Force, 110 was the only surviving son of the lat© J. C. Price, formerly of the staff of the Bank or New Zealand, Dunedin, and grandson of the late William Price (surgeon), Somerset, England. The late Private Price, who was well known in business circles it-' this city, served with the 10th Contingent in South Africa. The Rev. J. K. Archer, who began his ministry yesterday in the Vivian street Baptist Church, has had a wide and varied experience. For three and a half years he was assistant pastor to the Rev, Thomas Darrass, of Peterborough, England, where the congregations averaged over 800. At Heptonstall Slack, Yorkshire, where ho stayed seven years, ho had a membership of 350. His last English pastorate was Great' Grimsby. Since arriving in' Jfevv Zealand be has served the Baptist denomination in both Napier and Invercargill. Mr Archer, who is a forceful speaker, makes a special feature of work among men. ' The late Mr Albert Edward Tyrrell Devore, whose death has been reported from Auckland, was thrice returned unopposed as Mayor of Auckland, and occupied the Mayoral chair from December 18th, 1886, to December 18th, 1889. He was born at Devizes, Wiltshire England, in 1843, and was educated at Marlborough School. He left England for Dunedin in 1862, and removed to Auckland in 1879. When the Ponsonby Ward became part of Auckland city he represented it in the City Council, and continued in that capacity for a number of years. During his term as Mayor he reorganised the finances of the "city, effecting a great saving in the expenses. The Auckland Public Library and the Art Gallery were opened during his term. Mr Devore was for many years a member of the Auckland Harbour Board, and he was also a trustee of the Auckland Savings Bank. He always evinced a keen interest in. social affairs, and invariably studied the welfare of the city. He was elected president of the Auckland Rugby Union in 1890. The late Mr Devore was senior partner in the firm of Messrs Devore, Martin, and Prendergast, which, in the earlier days, was known as Messrs Deyore and Cooper.
