UNIVERSITY SENATE
OPENING OF SESSION THE CHANCELLOR’S ANNUAL OPENING ADDRESS. The annual session of the Senate of the University of New Zealand was opened at Victoria College yesterday. The Chancellor (Sir Robert Stout) presided, and there were also present the Hon. Dr Collins, Professor., Kirk and Hunter, Dr W. J. Anderson, Rev. W. A- Evans, and Messrs H. F. von Haast and H. H. Ostler (Wellington), Hon. J A. Tole, Professor Segar, Dr McDowell, and Mr J- W. Tibbs (Auckland), Professors R. J- Scott, J. Eight, J. Macmillan Brown, and Chilton (Christchurch), and Professors Malcolm, Benham, and Marshall, and Rev. A. Cameron. (Dunedin). The Chancellor delivered his annual address, which dealt mainly with the report of the Board of Studies, as reported in another column. Referring to the work of the university during 1915, the Chancellor said that the number of candidates examined for degrees had been 1355, as compared with 1877 in the preceding year. “Many of the undergraduates in all the colleges have gone to the war,” he said. “The returns are not complete, and are being added to weekly. Those that Were received at the office up to the close of the year sl*crwed that from Auckland University College the total number that had gone to the front was 210: of these fourteen had been killed in action, two died in hospital from sickness, three are missing, and twenty-two have tieeu wounded. In addition: to these, thirteen have enlisted, including one lecturer, but had not in December entered camp. From Victoria University College 217 had enlisted, and most of these have gone to the front. From Canterbury College 122 were on active service, including one professor and one assistant. Otago University has sent 212 to the front, including one member of the council and one professor, and of these) 18 have lost their lives.” v
In order to facilitate the departure of many students for the front extra examinations have been held.
The Senate set up committees and referred various matters to them for consideration and report. Other preliminary business was done, and then the Senate’ adjourned until 10 a.m. to-' day, when it will proceed with the election of a Vice-Chancellor.
