DEPARTMENT’S REPORT.

The annual report of the Education Department shows that there is a total of 277,392 scholars—an increase of 11,350, whereof fifty-two per cent, are, in the Metropolitan schools. The figures disclose that the population of the State is becoming mope concentrated in the towns, as 93J per cent, of the increase came from 627 of the larger schools, and the remaining 6i per cent, was distributed over 2631 small schools. During the year 94,198 pupils were medically examined, and 57,283 were found to be suffering from ailment* requiring attention.
