AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS
NEW METHOD OF COLLECTION
Tho new system of collecting agricultural statistics was described by the Minister for Agriculture (Hon. W. D. 3. Macdonald), in reply to a question put by Mr J. Craigie. The change Has been made in consequence of the unsatisfactory results of the old method.
“The new system of collecting these statistics, which is similar to that employed in Australia (a house-to-house collection by means of the police officers throughout the country) will be introduced at the close of tho present harvest, commencing in the North on February Ist next, and finishing in the South towards the end of April,” said the Minister. “During October ami November a collection of sowings will De made from farmers as complete as possible, and at the same time a census of the stocks in the hands of farmers. millers, and merchants will be taken, in order to ascertain the position on November 30th next. The results will be published as early as possible, and it is hoped that the new system -wilPgivc satisfaction. The threshing returns will be again collected monthly, and published as received. These returns have been proved to be reliable, and they give earlier information as to the actual results being obtained from the harvest than could be otherwise obtained.”
