A meeting of the Wellington City Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr J. P. Luke) presiding. Councillors G. Frost, J. Godber, J. Hutcheson, W. J. Thompson, L. McKenzie, J. Fuller, W. H. Bennett, M. Luckie, T. Bush, W. T. Hildreth, J. E. Fitzgerald, W. H. P. Barber and R. A. Wright were also present. It was resolved that the charges for lighting the National Reserve approved drill grounds should be met by the district fund account.
Instructions were issued for the small strip of Town Belt at the end of Rolleston street to be cleared of broom, etc., and planted. It was decided that the Wellington Master Plumbers’ Union be informed that, after full consideration of their request tho council cannot revert to the old system of allowing payment for the testing of fittings to bo made after the work has been completed, and that prepayment for such works must continue. For the information of the union it was pointed out that the amounts outstanding were sufficiently large to warrant the corporation auditor drawing attention to the matter. The application of the custodians of certain city reserves for an increase of wagas in accordance with the former decision of the council regarding labourers’ wages was not entertained, as the rates of pay of the applicants were over the minimum amount for increases fixed by the council. ' The public health committee recommended that owing to the increased duties of the sanitary department an additional inspector be appointed. After discussion, it was decided to refer the recommendation to the finance committee.
