RACING CONFERENCE
COUNTRY CLUBS MEET.
At the annual meeting of the Country Racing Clubs’ Association. Mr Albert Bruce (Thames) presided. The balance-sheet showed a deficit oi .£6 3s 9d on the year’s working- To cover the expenses for the ensuing year it was resolved that affiliated clubs pay the association one guinea each by way of a levy. A motion by the p.esident was carried as follows: ‘'That thd attention of the Government be drawn to the enormous increase of revenue derived from taxation imposed on racing clubs (amounting last year to over lEiOf.OOO), and that representations bo, made ; to the Prime .Minister that the existing system of taxation imposed on racing clubs by which, in addition to a tax of 24 per cent, on the gross amount put through the totalisator, a further tax'of 24 per cent, is rmXiosed on the gross receipts from other sources ifi inequitable and wrong in principle, and that any taxation other than the totalisaior tax should be on the basis of profits made by clubs, ’ A deputation was appointed to bring the resolution before the notice of the Prime Minister. ' Strong exception was taken to me levy imposed to meet the payment of salaries to stipendiary stewards, and the following motion by Mr Tuttoii was carried unanimously: —"That this association viewo with alarm the excessive taxation imposed on racing clubs /By the New Zealand Racing Conference to meet the payment of salaries and expenses'of stipendiary stewards, amounting last year to nearly JfSOiO; and are of opinion that the best interests of racing nave not been ap T prcoiably advanced b~ the introduction of stipendiary stewards.” The following motion dealing with the proposed tax on clubs to meet the co.-t of appointing permanent racecouise de tectives was also carried; —“That this association enter a strong objection to the increasing charges to be imposed on clubs by the New Zealand Racing • Conference and protests against the proposal submitted that oummitte© be constituted to appoint permanent racecourse detectives at a high cost, considering that the appointment and control ot such. matters should remain with the discretion of the clubs.” The following officers were elected for the coming year:—President, Mr A. Bruce (Thames); vice-president, Mr J. D. Evans; executive, Messrs H. H- Hayr and E. W- Alison (North Island), and E. Einney i and H. C. Van Asch (South Island).
