The Swedish Army has been placed on a war basis—3so,ooo Regulars and 176,02-6 Landsturm. ‘The munition supplies are the strongest possible. tThe military forces of Sweden’ are militia recruited on the Principle of universal service, but aided by a voluntarily enlisted personnel, which forms the permanent cadres for training purposes. Liability for service commences at the age of twenty-one. and lasts till the end of the fortieth year. The men belong to the first “ban” of the Active Army, or Hevaring, for eight years; then for four years to the second “ban.”_ and finally for eight year’s to the Landsturm. The initial period of training is 150 da vs for the infantry, garrison artillery, heavy artillery, and train. Tt is 231 days for cavalry, horse and field artillery, and engineers. The infautty. etc-, are called un for exercise three times in the remaining sever.' years of the first period *of their service, for thirty days each time. The cavalry and artillery have two trainings, each of forty-two days. The Swedish infantry are armed with the Mauser riflg (calibre R. 5 mm.), the horse and field artillery have the Krupp 7.5 cm. quick-firing gun.l
