The charitable aid committee of thd Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, at its meeting yesterday, was notified of the gift by Messrs J. Staples and Co.. Irtd., o f forty tons of coal for distribution among the poor of the city. The Wost’(>ort Coal Company has also placed five lions of coal at the committee’s disposal for the same purpose, A resolution ex pressivo of tho committee’s thanks and appreciation was unanimously peesed.
At last nigh t’s meeting of the City Council, Com tcillor W. H. Bennett moved: “Thati a special committee bo set up to conf>cr with the heads of departments wil ;h a view of making a definite recommendation to tho council as to what hoi idays shall be observed by tho various ■ departments under their control, the c ommittee to report in one month.” At l the Mayor’s suggestion, Councillor Bonnett altered his motion so as to sul >mit the matter to the finance committee, he being allowed (pro attend whei i the question was drat, cussed. An all-da y sitting took place yesterday of the Conciliation Council to dis- , cuss some disputed points in regard to the furnitrire trade. The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr P.
