In convorsatio n with a Christchurch reporter ycsterd jy regarding the -work of his department, with special reference to the effc ct of the war upon orders for material, the Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes, Postmaster-General, said (according to a Pries Association telegram) that not only iv as the war delaying the delivery of automatic telephone apparatus for Auckla ad and Wellington and several of the smaller places where improved servicer Mere urgently needed, but it was delaying the installation of the Murray multiplex printing telegraph apparal us. This immediately concerned Christ rhurch, for two quadruples sets had been under order for some months, one , for the Wcllington-Christ-church and ihe other for the Wellington- Auckland.; circuit. The apparatus would, it wrls confidently expected, enormously bicrcase the carrying capacity of thoaq, circuits, enabling eight messages (fa nr forwarded and four received) to b » sent over a single wire simultaneousiiy and so lessen the cost of transmission. Mr Rhodes mentioned that he hm’i recently received a letter from Mr Mitrrray, dated London April 23rd, which showed the great difficulty he was experiencing in getting his work done. ;
