The - balance-sheet showed , a small credit: balance- on the year's I ', working. Tno thirty-ninth annual report states that the annual “Betherick" tourney was won by Mr W. C. White (Class *V.) with a score of U wins and 1 loss, the second'and third prizes being divided by Messrs Still (Class I.) and W. C. Hill (Class 111.), who tied, with 5 wins and H losses each. . The annual telegraphic matchwith the Canterbury Chess Club was won by 7J games to 2J. The club has won one of its two correspondence games with the Sydney School ,-of dirts Chess Club, and holds a slight positional advantage in, the remaining rame, which is still in progress. To celebrate the club's removal to its present quarter* a sides match was played on Juno 17th, ivben. -Mr - Still’s team defeated ■Mr Barnes's by 8 games to 6. llegrct is expressed .’at a tailing away in .the •'membership, the club having now only twenty-one active and twelve' nouorary members.' The attendances during the past year have been unusually -imall, and it is bop'ed that the proposed ‘L>UvVellington'' championship tournamohts (senior and' junior; will eventuate , and be tho means of restoring a large measure of lost activity and interest in (To game locally. Mr W. C. Hill represented the club at the Christen uicii congress (held during the Christmas noildays), and made a very creditable showing in this his hrst attempt lo gain the New Zealand championship. Tho report concludes with appreciation of the weekly reports that have appeared in the local papers, and a tribute of thanks to all who havo rendered assistance in the past: twelve mouths. The report Was unanimously adopted, on the motion of the chairman, who voiced the - general regret that of late years very few young members have come forward to replace the gaps that occur hi the ranks from time to time. Mr C. W. Tanner suggested offering free instruction to the younger members of the T.M.C.A., and also opening tho club on Saturday evenings to scholars of secondary schools, as was done lasi year in Auckland with gratifying re-, suits. Something will, it is understood, be done iu this l direction at an early date. ■■ ■ ■ ■ .
