WANGANUI TRACK NOTES

Special to the “Times.” WANGANUI, May 16.

A large number of visiting horses have arrived to fulfil- 1 their engagements at the Wanganui, steeplechase meeting, and there is every prospect of big fields in all of the events. , King Lupin, Tinopai, Semolina. Daylight , Bill, Snowraker, Multiply, ( aud Birkful were amongst last night’s arrivals.

Black Northern is looking in great fettle, and he promises to start lavoumo for the Century, so well is he going. He went a couple of rounds this morning with Fdlvai, moving particularly well. He is declared u> be as fit as ever he was. and right back to bis very best form. :

Leonta will not be a starter in tho Century, but will run in the Connolly Handicap, for which he is much lancied, as-he is .reported to be galloping bettor than ever at Fordell. He may bo seen out later on in hurdle events, ’ but so far has not been put over, tho small slicks this season.

Emperador, aud Bimeter ran six furlongs this morning in Imin 19»oc. The former finished in front, and was galloping in fine style, . though he appears a bit on the big side. Banksia did not; shape too well in a six-furlong spin with Bonny Rigs, and appears to be lame behind. Bonny Rigg had the best of tho go, cutting out the distance in Imin 20sec.

The Polo moved freely in-covering a circuit, and looked none the worse for an accident which bofel him yesterday when ho was being .schooled over the big fences in company with Anpin and Vestal, the respective riders being AlcFlynn, L.' Traill, and C. Scott. All three took the first obstacle (a hencoop) well, but at the next (a brush fence) The Pole ran off, as he did again at the back. Coming round to the brush fence again McFlynu took The Pole to

tho inside so us to keep him straight, but he would not face the obstacle. Instead. he cleared the picket fence surrounding tiro number- board, which is quite close to the brush fence, and landed on the inside of the small enclosure on to the asphalt foundation. He then toppled over the picket fence on the other side, McFlynn being pitched off. Neither horse nor rider was hurt. It was a miraculous escape for both, : especially for McFlynn, whoso head must have missed striking a board projecting from the number board by the barest possible margin. Vestal and Appin both jumped well, the latter showing to most advantage.. King Lupin, Tinopai, Daylight Bill, Snowraker, Toreador, Aruake, and others did useful work.
