MAORI CONTINGENT
REINFORCEMENTS TO BE SENT.
A conference was held on Saturday between the Minister for Defence (Hon. James Allen), Sir James Carrol], M.P., Mr T. Parata, M.P. for Southern Maori, the Hon. Dr Pomare, and Mr T. E. Heuheu Tukino, the Taupe chief, to discuss matters relating to the Maori contingent. . -
Mr Allen afterwords explained that the Army Council in England had suggested to the New Zealand Government that the Maoris might be given an opportunity of going on active service after two months’ training, and asked whether sufficient reinforcements would bo available. Tho conference decided that the suggestion should he acted on and send reinforcements as far as possible. Tho opinion, was expressed that between 600 and 700 natives would be availaole within tho next eight months. They _will be trained at Auckland. The Maoris now at Malta will probably go into the firing line in a couple of months, perhaps less.
