RECRUITING
NOISY MEETING AT GORE. Press Association. GORE, May 15. At tho recruiting meeting last even* ing, when Mr H. D. Bedford, of Dunedin, was nearing the close of a stirring speech, ho appealed for recruits. AQ unpleasant incident then occurred. A well-known local solicitor, Mr W. F, Inder, said ho objected to Salvation Army methods, and made reference to Dunedin speakers not being needed to teach Gore patriotism. Interjcctors appealed to tho crowd, who showed angry resentment. Tho ’ police escorted the interjector outside, the crowd in numbers following, and becoming excited. Later the crowd assembled outside tho post office, where Mr Inder was., Feeling was shown. The crowd demanded that an apology bo made. Mr luderi said ho apologised if tho crowd thought he had insulted Mr Bedford or the crowd. Tho latter, still angry, escorted Mr Inder along the street to his hotot After some time the crowd dispersed. HAWERA RESPONDS WELL. ?rosß Association. HAWERA, May 13. ■! A largo and enthusiastic patriotic demonstration in connection with ro< cruiting movements was held in the Ox>era House on Friday evening. Addiesses stressing tho need for more men were given, by Dr iVloNab and Mr W, A. Veitch, . M.P.'s. Notwithstanding heavy recruiting during the week over twenty-five registered during tho evening.
