HUTT COUNTY

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL

The Hutt County Council met yesterday, when there .were present;— Councillors W. J. Howell (chairman), I. Edwards, J. W. Wakelin, M. W. Welch, J. Whiteman, and W. Galloway. , '

In his monthly report the inspector of works (Mr J. W. Cudby) stated that since April an old bridge in Whiteman’s I Valley had been taken out and replaced with 24-inch concrete pipes. The southern, end of the Akatarawa road was being metalled whore most likely to need it during the winter - months. Metalling was being pushed on with’on Main road in the Epuni riding, but through delay in getting the crusher repaired,it was impossible to get- all the ihotal required and they had to-, fall back on river shingle. Af fair / amount .of . methl was also being put on the* norths orn end of the Lowry Bay road.: On the Wainui-o-Mata (lower valley) road, 47 chains had been metalled at a total cost of £34 17s. In the Horokiwi riding a fair amount of metal, had been got but near tho junction of- Judgeford road with West road. Repairs to formation and metalling through Moonshine valley were well in hand. Improvements were also being made on the Pahautanui-Paromata road by cutting off sharp corners. . In - the Whareroa riding the Paekakariki Hill road improvements had been completed ; also 166 ft of 6-inch pipes * laid to drain the road, and repairs had, been effected to two small bridges’ and to tho road in the Mnngakotukhtuku valley. The docking on the Silverstream bridge in tho Epuni riding would very soon hav e to bo renewed throughout. The inspector recommended that another span be taken out at each end and filled in, which would reduce the cost of redocking and maintenance. The bridge was reduced some time ago by 44ft and a further oontlra-ction/ of 44ft could safely bo made. This would leave it 66ft in length. Tho report was adopted. ■ Permission was granted the Railway Department-; to make temporary use of the Granville road, Trenthain. > - Traffic at Trentham has increased so much-lately that it was resolved to apply for a subsidy of £IOO towards tho maintenance of the roads in that vicinity. A report regarding a proposed new bridge at Wai n u i-o-M at a, together with the estimated cost, was received from Mr G. Laing-Meason.—lt was decided that the matter be left in the hands of a sub-committee.

Accounts amounting to £859 19s 8d were passed for payment.
