ENEMY SUBJECTS
AGITATION FOR RESTRICTIVE MEASURES Preofi Association. DUNKDIN, May 11. What the Mayor described this morning as the ‘‘hellish practices” of the Gormans have revived in Dunedin -the ■question of interning all non-naturalis-ed enemy subjects in the Dominion as a precautionary measure. Close on 100 citizens waited on tho Mayor, urging that a public meeting bo called for discussing the question of tho treatment and restriction of onemy subjects who might bo regarded as potential foes. A strong feeling of resentment and indignation concerning tho Gorman atrocities by the employment of murderous agencies of destruction was demonstrated, although all acknowledged tho need of avoiding any precipitate action against naturalised Gormans or stirring up bitter public feeling. The deputation explained that they had been given evidence as to the iiperations of German spies in Dunedin. Tho Mayor (Mr Clark) said he could ■.only describo the recent atrocities on land and sea as hellish practices. Whihj agreeing to call a public meeting, ho hoped the people of Dunedin would do nothing to hamper the Government, which was probably working according to instructions from tho Imperial Government. He emphasised the need for all citizens and British subjects recognising that they were pledgto honour the scrap of paper which gave naturalised enemy subjects the rights, privileges, and freedom of British subjects.
