POLICE AND BY-LAW CASES

Yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was presided over by Mr D. G. A. Cooper, S.M. Peter MikkJesoa was fined 10s, m default forty-eight hours in gaol, for drunkenness. One first offender forfeited his hail of 10s, and another was remanded until this morning. . For using -obscene language in a public place on two occasions, Marion Coomber, a married woman, who first admitted the charge and then stated she had no.. recollection of the words used, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon on the first charge, while on the second a fine of £l, with costs 19s, was imposed. A month was allowed in which to pay the money. On a charge' of deserting from the liner Matatua on March 11th, John Tuck, who appeared on remand, was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment. ,An order was granted for him to be placed on board the ship before it sails on Sunday next. Young Fook. a Chinese seaman on the Knight Templar, was charged with having in his possession ten tins of opium, and with being concerned in the importation of the drug. On the application of Mr J. F. W. Dickson, the case was remanded until Monday next. Thomas Dayes pleaded not guilty to the theft of a bridle, an overcoat, and fourteen sacks, the' property of William Henry Hargreaves. John Parry, 'a second-hand dealer, gave evidence as to the, accused coming to his shop and selling the ooat. A fine of £2, with witnesses’ expenses 16s, was imposed, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment. A charge of the theft of a napkin-ring, the property_ of John Parry, was also brought against the accused, and on this he was convicted and ordered tooome up for sentence when called on. , Leo Steven Curtis, a member of the expeditionary force, who is charged wiSu theft from the Ohakune Borough Council of £22 3s 3d, was remanded to appear at Wanganui on March 29th. BY-LAW CASES, For allowing horses to wander, Charles John Duffy, Thomas McGoidrick, and Benjamin Dally were each fined 5s and 7s costs. Causing am obstruction on the footpath in Vivian street by leaving four packing cases tbereon resulted in Veitch and Allan being fined 6s and 7s costs. Similar fines were inflicted on Henry Grant, Herbert Compton, Michael Began, William Henry Davies, and John Howard for various breaches of the vehicular by-laws, while for driving a vehicle at other than a walking pace across the intersection of Taranaki and Vivian streets, Philip John De Souza was fined 10s, with costs 7s, in default forty-eight hours.
