THE LAND-SEEKERS
COMPETITION FOR WAIRARAPA BLOCK. A meeting of the Wellington Land Board was held yesterday, when there were present: Mr T. N. Brodrxck (Commissioner of Crown Lands) in the chair, Messrs J. Dawson, J. Georgetti, H. S. Ellingham, and C. Mclntyre. Considerable interest has been aroused among the farming community of late regarding a section of second-cla,ss land In the Hikawera settlement, which was balloted for during the day. The - land is scheduled as section 15, block 16; area, 632 acres capital value, £5780; rent per acre per annum (approximate), 8s 2id; half-yearly rent, £l3O Is. Situated on the Pahaoa road in the Hikawera settlement. Access from Martinborough about twelve miles distant by metalled dray road. Section comprises good pastoral country, with good broad spurs, felled and in grass. Soil good quality, a little hard in places, on papa formation; watered by running stream and a dam. Elevation ranges from about 500 ft to 1300 ft above sea-level. The whole day was occupied in considering a record number of applications, and finally 118 were approved of. The ballot took place shortly after 5 o’clock, the successful applicant being Janet Nichol, of Martinborough.
