A SUBSTANTIAL LIST, Mr I). G, A. Cooper, S.M., presided over yesterday's aituug of the Magistrate’s Court. Caroline Smith, who was found at 1.35 a.m. on Sunday sleeping at Te Aro railway station, was charged with being a rogue anti a. vagabond, and was sentenced to-sis mouths' imprisonment. INSOBRIETY.

Theodor© Anderson and William Stride, for drunkenness, were each fined 10s or forty-eight hours. A third .offender, ‘ Edward Cunningham, was fined £l, in default three days. Soventy-fivo previous convictions had been recorded against Timothy Donovan, who, for his latest lapse, was sent fo gaol for , two months, Henry Firth- wa a convicted and discharged in regard to drunkenness, and fined £2, or one month, for obscene language. A fourth offence of drunkenness within six months was tho cause of. Peter Hughes being fined £3, or seven days, while the use of obscene language to a number of children in Tory street involved him in a further penalty of £3, or one month. Catherine Begg consented to ah order removing her to Pakatba Island for twelve months.

Several persons wer© dealt with", for breaches of. prohibition , orders.. John Hyde, for procuring liquor, was fined £i, with costs 70. In default three days’ imprisonment; and Mary Irene Williams. for a second offence in this respect, was fined £2. with costs 7s, or seven days. Bessie Tattle (for whom Mr H. F. O’Leary appeared) was fined 10s, with costs 7s, or forty-eight hours, and Kenneth Minahan was penalised to the extent of £l. with costs 7s, or three days, for entering licensed premises. MAINTENANCE.

William John Anderson, charged, with having failed to carry out the provisions of an order for payment of 10s per week for tho maintenance of his mother (for, whom Mr J. AV, Dickson appeared), the arrears having amounted to £4 on November 23rd, was ordered to make payments at the rate t>f 13® 6d per week until the arrears were cleared off. William Carl Frederick Anderson, whose arrears on. an order of 15s a week for the maintenance of _ two children amounted to £lO 5s on November 30th; was directed to make n-o the deficit by paying £1 a week; in default fourteen days’ imprisonment. , Agnes Mercer remonstrated with nor husband, Charles Mercer, on the subject of .his arrears and the bad health .which ho pleaded was the cause of his not being able to keep up the payments for her suppqrt, her contention being, that he did not speak the truth in this respect. Tho respondent stated that ho could not work, and wag being supported by his two sons. The magistrate pointed out that if the defendant could not pay tho money he could apply to have the order cancelled. Defendant was ordered te pay 10s per week from Jana, ary 25th till the arrears(£lo 12s 6d) were paid off; in default fourteen days. An order for separation and maintenance against Timothy O’Halloran was sought by his wife (Alice Matilda O’Halloran), the mother of eight children, the grounds of her application being persistent cruelty on the part of tho defendant. She stated that her husband had been addicted to drinking habits for about twelve months past. When he came home drunk at night he would order her and the family out of the house, and they would have' to wait outside till he went to bed. Ho had only struck her twice. The application was granted, and maintenance was ordered to be paid at the rate of £1 10s per week,
