ON LOWER VISTULA
THE RUSSIAN PROGRESS CONTINUES CARPATHIAN PASS STORMED AND CAPTURED By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received January 18, 3.30 p.m.) PETROGRAD. January 13, An official communique says:— ‘‘Successful progress continues on the lower /Vistula, “Six German regiments made violent assaults on January 16th, near Gumine, supported hy exceptionally heavy artillery fire. “As a result of seven attacks, and desperate bayonet fighting, the Germans captured a single advanced trench. t “Tho Germans at Konopnitza, on the evening of the fifteenth, sapped t<> within thirty paces of our entrenchments, but were overwhelmed by hand grenades. “Tho Russian volunteers, taking advantage of the confusion, grounded the communication trendies, forcing the enemy to retreat. “Throe attacks south of Pinczow wore repulsed, “Our advance guards at Bukovina stormed tho Kirlibaha Pass, fn the Carpathians, bordering on Transylvania.” THE HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT The Prime Minister has received tho following message from tho High Commissioner, dated London, January 18th, 12.10 a.iu.:— Petrograd reports.—“On the right hank of the Vistula wo made a successful advaheo against tho Prussians. On tho loft hank tho enemy stubbornly attacked the Russian positions in the region of Kunrar, six regiments making seven consecutive attacks. There was fierce bayonet fighting, and the Germans took trenches. In other districts tho enemy was repulsed from his positions by artillery fire. In Bukovina the Russian outposts captured tho Carpathian Pass at Kirlibaha, bordering on Transylvania.”
