Dr Houghton arrived in Wellington by the Main Trunk express yesterday afternoon.

Mr J. L. Rutherford, of Auckland, arrived in Wellington by yesterday alternoou's express. Mr A. Le Cren, of Timaru, is at present visiting Wellington, and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Dr and Mrs Owen wore passengers for Auckland by the Main Trunk express last night. Dr Wilkin, lately of Petoue, has taken up his residence in Pongaroa, under the Medical Guarantors’ Association.

Mr C. M. Luke, president of the Wellington Central Chamber of. Commerce, will leave on a holiday trip tc Sydnev on Friday week.

Mr Strack, 8.A., assistant master-at the KiJbirnie School, Wellington, has been appointed special assistant at the Palca District High School. Among those who left by the Main Trunk express last night wore Mr and Mrs Buxton, Messrs Davy, Toogood, and A. Young. Inspector O’Donovan, late of Napier, left Wellington last night by tho ferry steamer on his way to Dunedin, whither he has been transferred. Lieutenant G. W. Henderson, of New Plymouth, who has been appointed to the sth (Wellington) Battalion, now in camp at Treuthara, has arrived and taken up his duties. Major IV. S. Austin, inspector of schools at Greymouth, has received leave of absence, and will go into camp at Trentham to join tho reinforcements for the front.

Mr and Mrs Boyd, Mr and Mr* Walker, Messrs McLeod, Allum, Lockyer, and L. Manning were included in the passengers by the Main. Trunli express which left for Auckland yesterday afternoon. The Hon. D. R. Hall, Attorney. General for New South Wales, and Mrs Hall, who ha've been on a tour of the North Island, returned to AVellington yesterday afternoon via the Main Trunk.

Visitors to town yesterday who are staying at the Empire Hotel include Messrs H. Brewer (Waipawa), E. Hewitt (Martinborough), T. Cunningham (Palmerston North), A. Bell, F. Hutchinson, J. Ellison and F. Olsen (all of Auckland).

Mr Hunter Booth, of Wellington, has been appointed teller at the Bank of New South Wales, Waverley, in place of Mr Manners. Mr Booth is a son of the manager of the Bank of Australasia in Patea. Mr Manners has joined the expeditionary force. The Main Trunk express from Auckland yesterday had on board Mr and Mrs Armstrong, Messrs J. Rowe, C. O’Connor, J. Nash, C. Brown, Martin, Gore, Gordon, Bell, Kersey, Arcus, Rutherford, Hodgoe, Moore, Robertson, Lees, Treafford, and Hay.

Sergeant Wade, who was formerly stationed at Eltham, and Sergeant King, of Picton, have arrived in Wellington to fill the vacancies caused through the transfers of Sergeant Henry to Pelmerston North and Sergeant Fitzgerald to Temuka.

The civil servants of New Plymouth presented Major Fletohwwith a puiTo of sovereigns on the eve of his departure for Trentham, before going to the front. On account of his having received: so many presentations, n was decided to give the cash to Major Fletcher.

Bayfield,/ Ist Company of the Canterbury Infantry Battalion of the main expeditionary force, which took place at Cairo on Friday, from pneumonia. Deceased finest of kin is Mrs Bayfield, of Carlton road, Merivale, Christchurch. Next Tuesday the Mayor of Wellington (Mr J. P. .Luke) will accord a, cmo reception to Mr Meredith Atkinson, lecturer and organiser for Australasia for the Workers’ Educational Association. Mr Atkinson will deliver a public lecture in the Town Hall the same night and leave for Christchurch on Wednesday, where he is to address* th<i Senate of the University of New ZcaZealand.

Mr John William Copithorno died at Otaki on Sunday at the age of 58. He arrived in Wellington from Ireland in 1884 and had resided here ever since. After many years in the service of the Harbour Board he retired and ox>ened a music warehousein Vivian street. He was an office; bearer in Wesley Church, Taranaki street, and latterly in Trinity Methodist Church, Island Bay. __ He was also a member of Lodge Waterloo. Mr T. W. Waite, district traffic manager, Dunedin, who has been appointed commercial agent to the Railway Department, is a native of i ork England. Ho entered the service ot the North-Eastern Railway and was there for eight years, and passed through various branches to the office of the General Passenger Supintendent of the line. He arrived at Lyttelton in 1879, and some two years later entered the railway department as clerk in the traffic department. For some years he was chief clerk to the Railway Commissioners, and on the Government resuming control, on January Ist, Ib.io, he was appointed chief clerk to the New Zealand Railways.
