TYPISTS
To the Editor “N.Z. Times.”
Sir, —I am informed that the Government is calling for applications from shorthand-typists and that the applicants are to undergo an examination on the 24th of next month. Now ,sir, I know there are a good many typists out of employment at present. Many of them have lost thear places on account of the war, and I need not point out that the loss of wages is a serious drawback in some of their homes. .Would it not, therefore, be more patriotic of the Government if it had each applicant examined when she made her application ? Why keep them waiting until probably the beginning of the New Year If there are vacancies why not have them filled at once ? And if some of the applicants are not quit© up to the standard, it is surely not expecting too much of the Government—under the circumstances—to strain a point in their favour, especially as all are appointed on’ six months’ probation.— am, etc., TYPIST.
