At< last night’s meeting of tlio City Council, a letter was road from Councillor J. Fuller calling attention to the importance of having tho beach at Oriental Bay kept clean. The writer pointed out that recently a dead dog, very much decomposed, was lying on the beach opposite Grass street, in a locality where children were in tho habit of 'playing. The city engineer (Mr W. H. Morton) reported that tbe beach was regularly attended to every week, and added that a number of the residents in tho vicinity had been asked to communicate with the corporation yard upon finding anything wrong; there was not sufficient work to keep a man continuously employed on the beach. Tho Mayor said it would pay very well if a few shillings more were spent on tho care of tho beach, in order to Lave it kept thoroughly clean. The Wellington Homing Pigeon Society held the first race of the season from Culverden to Wellington (143 miles air-line) on Wednesday. Fourteen lofts competed, sending 83 birds. Tho following were tho results of the race;—J. Bruce, 1009 yards per minute; A. Clark, 999.6 yards; J. H. Clark, 999.4 yards; T. Miller, 995 yards; W. Bailey, 993 yards; C. Ridding, 991 yards.
