CITY RESERVES
THE SEASON'S PLANTING
The town belt forester's report on planting operations for t the 1914 season was presented to the City Council last evening. It showed that during the season close on 60.000 trees, shrubs, etc., were planted out, and over 60,000 cuttings and seedling plants lined out, the greater portion of which should be sufficiently well rooted for planting out next season. The number of trees and shrubs planted in the various parts were as follow: Central Park 35,000, Tinakori hills 15,000, Sydney street 1500, Newtown Park 2500; total. 54,000. Last season's planting was also gone over, and the failures replaced. The greatest death rate was at Lyall Bay. where over 20 per cent, of the trees succumbed to the trying effects of the weather. The total number of trees and shrubs replaced on various plantations was 3700. The lime trees planted on Upland road, Kelbnrn, with the exception of two, survived the exposure, although very much damaged, and have been planted in more sheltered situations, and replaced with mountain elm. The greater part of .the sandhill to the south of Lyall Bay ground has been planted with marram grass and sown with lupin, which is already showing np through the sand, and should nrovent any further sand drifting on that area.
