PATRIOTIC SPORTS & CONCERT

At a meeting of the patriotic sports and entertainment sub-committee held yesterday afternoon, it was decided to hold a concert in the Grand Opera House on Wednesday evening next, when the items of the programme are to be contributed By the mon of His Majesty’s Navy and the members of the expeditionary force. Mr J. Dykes has kindly consented to co-operate with the military and naval authorities in- arranging the programme. Messrs J. Williamson, Ltd., have lent the Grand Opera House free of charge. The proceeds of the concert will be donated to the war fund. THE SPORTS MEETING. Arrangements have now been completed for the military sports meeting to be held at .Newtown Park at 2 p.m. to-morrow. There will he 81 events in all. The first event will start at 2 o’clock, and it is hoped to get through the programme by 5 p.m. Besides the 15 standard championship events there will be a number of variety races, which should cause a great deal of amusement to the spectators. The performances of the “Jack Tars” at the last Carnival in March are no doubt still fresh in the minds of the people who attended, and on this occasion the blindfold, barrel race, the spar and pillow fight, the obstacle race, the sack race, and the hoot and barrel race should ho even more interesting and amusing. The military authorities state that the entries are

coming in well, and there will no doubt bo keen competition. Competitors are; reminded that they must bo on their marks at the allotted time, as it will be necessary to get the events on punctually, otherwise it, will be im, possible to got through the programme. There will be something going on the whole of the afternoon. The various running races, field events, and variety races, will be competed for at the same time in different part® of thr field.
