SHARP EARTHQUAKE

TWO SEPARATE SHOCKS.

CAPE CAMPBELL LIGHT EXTINGUISHED.

A sharp earthquake was experienced in Wellington immediately after i o’clock yesterday, and a lighter shock followed it in about twenty minutes. The first shako was sufficiently heavy to cause some consternation to nervous people; buildings swayed and crockery rattled in a disconcerting manner, bu. no damage in the city has been reported. Further afield the visitation appears to have been somewhat severe. Tho tremors seem to form part of i. cycle, starting with a ’quake shortly after midnight on Tuesday night. Information has been received by the Marine Department from Cap© Campbell Lighthouse that an earthquake which occurred there yesterday disarranged the apparatus, preventing thr light from being shown, and in consequence no light will be exhibited from tho station until further notice. The department will despatch the lighthouse expert by the Hinemoa this morning to nut the light in order. Due notice will be given when the light will bo again exhibited. Reports j received per Press Association state that shocks were felt at Nelson at 1 p.m. and 1.30 p.m., and at Blenheim at 1.5 p.m. and 1.20 p.m. The earthquake was felt very severely in tho Hutt Valley. Houses rocked in an alarming manner, and the second shock arrived in the form of a jolt. Jugs and cups on dressers remained swaying for over -twenty minutes, and many of the inhabitants were greatly alarmed.
