HOROWHENUA NOTES
From Our Own Correspondent. OTAKI, Wednesday. At a well-attended meeting of the Horowhenua Trotting Club Messrs J. Smith, W. Ryder and F. Burnell were appointed to lead in the first, second and third horses respectively, and Messrs Frank Best and J. Taylor to assist the clerk of the course. Mr H. McMillan of Koputoroa, was elected a vie e-preside it in place of Mr Scott, resigned. Mrs B- F. Spencer, of Shannon, and an inmate of the Otaki Hospital, died at the, institution at 4he end of last week after a short illness The funeral, which took place on Sunday, was largely attended. Sincere sympathy is felt for Mr Spencer, who is left with two little children. Mrs George Fairley, of Otaki, entered the local hospital this afternoon for the purpose of undergoing an operation. Mr Fairley is also indisposed, and is under the doctor's care. . , . A move is on foot in Levin to join tho infantry section of the Levin National Reserves to the Levin Rifle Club. The mounted division have already promised to join. So far the National Reserves in Otaki are dormant, and have not had a single parade, whereas Levin is drilling several times weekly. . Further privileges have been disposed or in connection with the Horowhenua Trotting Club, and the total sum received now amounts to .£lO3. The booths realised £25. the cates £6l. the cards £lO. and the luncheon booth £7. Among the acceptors for tho Horowhesma Trotting Club’s meeting • on Wednesday next are borses from Palmerston, Hastings, Masterton, Foxton, Christchurch, Hutt, Petone, and Hawera. The course is in fine order, and promises to be very fast. The district was visited by a cold snap last night at about 10.30, and in consequence a heavy fall of snow occurred on the hills. , , A patriotic concert was held at Otaki last night, when Messrs E-J. Hill, Hamilton Hedges, Gilchrist and Miss cegnef, of Wellington, were among the performers. The concert was a splendid one, and credit is due to Mrs R. M. D Ath, who organised the programme. The door takings amounted to nearly £ls, while tickets sold should amount to £8 to £lO. The singing of The Absent-minded Beggar" brought forth £3 11s BJd, including one hundred pennies. . Constable Satherley has been obliged to retire temporarily, from duty owing to an injury received to. hie loot through a tvd-hot nail running into it at Thursday's fire. ~ , Mr J. P. Reid, who has been resident of Foxton for many years, intends leaving shortly for Auckland, where he will eo 1b for farming. „ „ • , The school children of Foxton havo given £5 7s towards the patriotic fund. Mr Higgott has sent Merry Frank, Peroneal and Parewanui to represent his stable at the Marten MT Nat Williams is represented by Elevate, Mr Webster by Alecto, and Mr Bowden bv Hush-a-bye. It is expected tha, some of the horses will perform well.
A matter arising out of a building contract, in which a question of liability was referred to arbitration, was before His Honour the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) in the Supreme Court yesterday. A contract had been entered into between T. E. K. Burgess, dentist, and Isaac Clark and Son, builders, for the erection of a building by the latter firm at a price of £1250, and it was provided that in the event of any dispute with the architect as to the amount due, the question should bo referred to arbitration. At the conclusion of the contract, there was a sum in dispute, which was duly referred to the arbitrators and adjudicated upon. Mr M. Myers, on behalf of Mr Burgess, now moved to have the award set aside, on the ground that the proper legal procedure had not been followed. Mr T. Neave opposed the motion, on behalf of Messrs Clark and Son. Judgment was reserved.
