HOROWHENUA NOTES
OTAKI. Wednesday. From Our Own Correspondent. In view of the war no road works, unless of an urgent nature, are to bo carried on by the Horowhenua County Council, while the loan proposals for water, ■ lighting, and street improvement by the Otaki Town Board have been abandoned. Bridges throughout the county axe being guarded night and day. Several Maoris are expressing their willingness to join any force that is needed for the front. Many are or a powerful nature. A number of local European residents have also agreed to sign on. . Church bells are being- rung nightly at 8 o’clock, when the Vicar of Otaki hopes all will hold prayer or sing the National Anthem. The Otaki Bowling Club has given a donation of £5 towards the waxfunds, while members of the club are each giving 2s 6d towards a movement, inaugurated by the ladies, whereby clothing/ etc., will bo purchased. Manakau residents are offering several horses for the war, many of the animals being valuable ones. Some residents are giving- monetary donations. ■ ■ Special meetings are to be held\ throughout with_a view of raising further donations, 'while ladies’ committees are working hand in hand for the success of the affair. /
