LACROSSE

(By Freeman.)

Last Saturday the elements were kind and cond.txons were well-nigh perfect for lacrosse. CAPITOL v. KELBDBN. ■

This match, as was s ant-cipatea. proved a close gamo, although the display- of lacrosse was hardiy as good os might have been-' expected. The fay of the ground can be biamed to a certain extent, but still there was tor too much “scrapping” for the bail on tho ground and much erratic passing. The score. 6 goals.'all, is hardly a fair criterion of the game, for had the Keiburn attacks used a little more judgment and taken half the, opportunities offered, Capitol would have left the field with their first loss of the season.

The blue attacks, with the exception of Milne, who was not made enough use of, and Hiddlestom, seemed over - - anxious, crowding the goal continually, giving bad passes, and showing .bad judgment in shooting. Hiddleston played a fine game, one of his goals being a fine piece of solo work. The defence men without exception played well, and the inclusion of Gandar in goal has certainly strengthened the team. Kel'burn have 1 several young players of distinct promise in Toung, Wyatt, and, Hewitt, and with a little more experience they will be of valuable assistance to their side.

Capitol played with Bob Renkin in goal, and while ho did some good sei v;ce there, ho would doubtless have been .of more use to his side dn the field... Of the Capitol’s attack,. An-' dfowß, Stanton, and Renkin were the pick. Stanton is a much-improved player this season, and ■ did very good Work for'Msside. ‘ “ . ‘ " WELLINGTON’ v. COLUMBIA.- . •

The Wellington-Columbia game resulted in a well overdue victory for the latter team, although .they were lucky in scoring 5 goals, while Wei. lington were playing with a strong sun in their eyes. It is pleasing to note that Columbia turned out with only one man short. This win should liven them up considerably, land if they can keep up to their full complement will have to be reckoned with for the rest of the season.

In Fama, Grant, and Leydon they possess a fine trio on the attack, who play with rare combination, and. judgment. O’Leary is always a them in the side of the opposing attack. Baker was playing again on Saturday, and played well. ' It is' a pity that this man is not more keen m turning up to every match. A new player noticed on the Wellington sice was Young. Playing on attack in the first stages of the game he gave a very good display, and again showed to splendid advantage in goal in the second half. ■ A good goalkeeper is what Wellington sadly needs this year, but I understand that it is unlikely that Young will be available again this season. . Two players on the Wellington side show -a strong tendency towards rough play and reckless checking. Hast’.e is new to the game, and of course there are excuses to be made for him. Canty, the other offender in this respect,. is a player of some years’ ’experience now, and should know better. Nothing tends to harm the gam© more than tactics of. this sort, and referees should have no compunction in putting it down with a firm hand. To-day’s games, Kclhurn v. Wellington and Capitol v. Columbia, should both prove close and interesting games. The referees are Messrs Lucas and Andrews respectively.
