The Now Zealand R.gby team defeated New South Wales oy 27 points to 6 on the Sports Ground yesterday in fine weather, and in the presence of fifteen thousand, spectators. The ground was hard and fast, and all in favour of the home team, but the visitors were much superior, and it was a triumph of combined skill over individual effort. The teams were: —

New Zealand—Full-back, O’Brien; three-quarters, Lynch, B. Roberts, and Loveridge; five-eighths, Ryan and Black; half-back. E. Roberts; forwards, Cain, Francis, Irvine, McIseecc, Wilson, Bruce, Downing, and Murray. - New South Wales Full-back, L. Dwyer; three-quarters, E. Carr, H. Wogan, H. Jones, and D. fjuttor; five-eighth, W. Tasker; half-hack, F. Wood; forwards, W. Watson, C. Prentice, H. George. E. Fahey, C. Wallach, J. Duffy, F. Thompson, and H. Baker. New South Wales kicked off,- and fast following up had New Zealand in difficulties, their defensive work being very poor, and within half a minute of the" commencement of the match Carr scored for New South Wales, but Wogan failed to improve on the try. N.S.W. 3, N.Z. 0. Now. South Wales continued to press, but from a nn\ee in New Zealand’s twenty-five, the Now Zealand backs got going, R. Roberts making a brilliant run down the field, and play settled in the home team’s territory. Close work ensued among the forwards, and the ball was carrier right up to New South Wales’s lino, where Cain gained possession and got over. E. Roberts was unsuccessful with the kick. N.S.W. 3, N.Z. 3. Fast work by both sides followed, during which New South Wales were penalised, and R. Roberts kicked a goal. N.Z. 6, N.S.W. 3. Close forward work in midfield was now the order of the day, neither side making much headway. From a melee, after a line-out, Loveridge was injured and had to removed from the field. Taylor replaced him, and immediately play was taken to New Zealand’s territory. The ball went out to the Welshmen’s backs, the three-quarter line making a good rush, but fine defensive work by the New Zealand rearguard saved the situation, and play returned to midfield. Undaunted the New South AVales forwards again returned, but good kicking by the New Zealand backs repelled the attack. The New Zealanders now assumed tho aggressive, and good forward work shift- - ed play to New . South AVales’s quarters, where Taylor got the ball and slipped over the line, placing it between the posts. R. Roberts failed to convert. N.Z. 9, N.S.AV-. 3. Open work in. midfield followed, aim then the Australians carried play to New Zealand’s twenty-five, whore they were awarded a free kick. AVogan Had the shot at goal, but it fell short i Black took the ball and found the line in midfield just as the whistle sounded for half-time. ( On resuming, the Australians followed up a fine kick, and play settled in New Zealand’s twenty-five. . New South ’ AVales, however, were penalised, and this gave tho visitors an opportunity to remove operations to midfield. Here E. Roberts got the ball, and si brilliant run by him and Taylor was stopped by the; opposing backs.Fast forward play by both sides ensued, but a little later E. Roberts again obtained possession, and after making a good opening, passed to Ryan, who g<At over. E. Roberts failed to add the extra points. N.Z. 12, N.S.AV. 3. The Australians followed up the kick out, but Ryan got the ball and found the line in their territory. The Australians cleared, hut Lynch gained possession, and by a fine kick put it well into New South AVales’s twenty-five. The New Zealand forwards followed up fast, and a scramble ensued near NewSouth AVales’s line, from which Bruce got the ball and forced his way over. E. Roberts failed with- the kick. . N.Z. 15. N.S.AV. 3. The Australians attacked fiercely, but Lynch got possession and kicked it well down the field. Dwyer gathered it up, but Taylor collared him before he could get in his kick. A melee followed, from which McNeece secured the ball and scored. E. Roberts failed to convert. N.Z. 18, N.S.AV. 3. From loose play in midfield, Sutter, Jones and George indulged in a brilliant passing! rush, which was stopped by Ryan. The latter then broke away-with, the ball, and when near the coal-line transferred to Lynch, who got over. He failed to improve on his try. N.Z. 21, N.S.AV. 3. A passing rush by - the New Zealanders was intercepted by Tasker, and a brilliant passing run followed between Baker, Duffy, and AVood. ' O’Brien attempted to stop the rush, but tackled illegally, and New South AVales were awarded a try. AVogan failed with tho kick. N.Z. 21, N.S.AV. G. The New Zealanders, undaunted by this reverse, returned to the attack. E. Roberts secured the ball, and passed to Ryan, who again scored. R. Roberts failed to add the extra points. •N.Z. 24, N.S.AV. 6. A little later, from loose play, E. Roberts again got possession and sent the ball to Taylor who was pulled down immediately. Roberts recovered the ball again and passed to Ryan, from whom it went to Black and Lynch, and the last-named, got over. Ho failed to improve on his try. N.Z. 27, N.S.W. 6. Fierce forward play ensued in New South Wales’s twenty-five, but a fine kick removed play to New Zealand’s territory, and the Australians were attacking when the.whistle sounded.
