MAGISTRATE’S COURT

POLICE, DEFENCE, AND BY-LAW . OASES. Yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was presided over by Mr D. G. A. Cooper, S.M. William Joseph O’Dwyer was charged with obtaining £5 from Charles Frederick .Bass, of the Rising Sun Hotel, by means of a valueless cheque on the Bank of New Zealand, with intent to defraud. Ho was further charged with the theft of a horse and harness at Auckland, valued at £ls 10s. Chief-Detective Bjroherg asfked for a remand till Monday next, so that a local matter could be looked into. This was granted. Michael Boyle and Joseph Dante (alias Deleek), who were charged With conspiring to defraud Thomas Pettigew, werh remanded to Thursday. On the application of Mr P. W. Jackson, who appeared for the accused, bail was- allowed in - the sum of £SO. AEnnie 'O’Connor, charged with being a rogue and a vagabond, was remanded till Tuesday. For using obscene language, James Grant was fined £2, with witness’s expenses 4s, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment; Andrew Waters (alias E. W. Waters) was fined £5, with witnesses’ expenses £1 10s, in default one month’s imprisonment. DEFENCE PROSECUTIONS.

For failure to render personal service, as required by the Defence Act, Frederick Harold Barker, Clyde Henry Maohu, Norman Joseph Machu, Patrick McMahon, Francis Joseph Mason, Edgar Robert Renner, George Simmonds Renner, Godfrey Essex Stevens, Arthur Lionel Seoullar, WUliam Henry Robinson, and Albert James Mann were each fined ss, with court costs 7s, in default twenty-foUr hours’ military detention; William Thomas Sullivan and Ronald Roy Mexted were each fined 10s, with court costs 7s, or fortyeight hours’ military detention; James 'Grant was fined '£l, or forty-eight hours’ military . detention. The following were cautioned and discharged: Herbert William Adams, James McMurrick, Wilford Rioe, Alan Frederick Spierling. Joseph Gwynne, charged with cruelly ill-treating a horse, was remanded to July 17th. BY-LAW CASES. For allowing stock to wander, Lavington McWilliams, Joseph Walker, and Emil Johanas Johansson were each fined ss, with court costs 7s. Claude Feir, for furiously and negligently riding a motor-cycle in Main road. Karori, was fined £3, with costs £3 13s, in default one month’s imprisonment. For hreadhes of by-laws, Percy Baker was fined 10s, with court costs 7s, in default three days’ imprisonment ; Alexander Andrews, J. Bryant, T. A. Chamberlain, William Henry Eadee, Oswald Graham (two charges), and W. Fellington were each fined ss, with conrt costs 7s, in default three days’ detention.
