RATES ON SPORTS GROUNDS
QUESTION OF REMISSION. Free* Association. AUCKLAND, July 10. A deputation from the Auckland branch' of tho New Zealand Sports Protection League this afternoon waited upon the Mayor (Mr 0., J. Harr, C.M.G.) to ask for the remission ot rates on grounds used exclusively for the purposes of, any outdoor sport and not for profit or gam. The Mayor said he had a good dcaV of sympathy with the views put before him. It seemed to him that mi a city where the population was crowding in, the sports clubs were fulfilling a useful public duty by keeping lung spaces open, and the whole community got the benefit. It might be possible to do something in the direction indi-. cated. In the case of golf clubs, to which 'be belonged, they were being very heavily penalised. He thought tho whole thing should be gone into by the Legislature. He asked the deputation to appoint two of its number to meet tho finance committee of thm City Council at the next meeting.
