Tho death occurred yesterday morn ing of Mr John Mocßae, formerly mana-ger-of the Rowlands and Akitio stations, at the age-of sixty years. Deceased had been ill for a considerable period. It was only om Thursday that ho made a donation of £IOOO to tho Mosberton Y.M.C.A. The visit to Now Zealand of Sir Hartmann Just, Assistant-Under-Sec-retary of State for the Colonies, was brought to, a close yesterday, when ho left Auckland for Vancouver by the R.M.S. Niagara. Woodward and Sirs Woodward, in view of their departure for Karori, Mr Woodward was tho recipient of a gold -watch frqnrt’the-'p'air-ishioners; and a case of pipes from the Foxton branch of the C.E.M.S., of which he was president.-The Ladies’ Guild presented Mrs Woodward with a handsome ring, set with diamonds and. sapphires. , • Last evening the officers of the stationery office branch of the Printing and Stationery Department, .presented Mr E. J. Bethell with a handcutlery set on tho occasion of his approaching marriage. Mr B. B. Mr Bethell is very well known in Association football circles, having at one time been a Wellington representative. At a representative gathering _of rrailway officers in the, head office buildings yesterday, Mr M. Cronin, who has-retired from the Railway Department on superannuation Rafter thirtyfive years’ service, was presented with a valuable memento 61 his connection with. the department.. __ Mr Cronin has ‘filled' various positions" in the department, and for many years he has been attached to tho head office. Mr E. H. Hiley, General Manager, in-making-the presentation, referred tc , Mr Cronin’s long service and ‘ many, good qualities, and was supported by Mr H. Buxton (Chief, Traffic Manager),, under whom 1 Mr Cronin worked for some years. - 'Mr Dan Crawford, ~ F.B-G.F., t, pioneer missionary and explorer, wilt give a series 'of lectures and addresses in. the _ Town ' Hall, commencing on Friday next. Mr Crawford penetrated into Central Art rica to a district 250 miles beyond thd' spot where the heart of Livingstone was buried. There, with other helpers, ho has conducted a. fine mission among the natives. Besides tho work of evangelising and Bible translating, he has also , done •; great th in js th ere ,in tlie construction of roads, in the building of model native aIU F in the establishment of schools. The Luanza mission, with wliich he is associated, is now well known and its work great--ly admired by Central African missionaries. Mr .Crawford is visiting New Zealand and Australia, not- upon—his own initiative, but in response to an urgent appeal from leading Christian men that lie should do so. The Rev, Peter Fleming, of Adelaide, acted as th© medium of communication, and as-,, sociated with him are, such well-known, men as Sir Samuel Way (Chief Justice of South Australia) and tho president of the British and Foreign Bible So-. ciety. Sir Charles Poore, and others.
