HOROWHENUA NOTES

From Oar Own Correspondent. OTAKI. June 11. Two hookey matches' were played here yesterday, when Te Horo defeated Rahui, 3—and Otaki defeated Tainui. 4 —l- From a spectacular point of view neither ’of the matches was interesting. Remaining games promise to be very keen, and some good contests are expected. „ , , , , r While Mi- James Rutherford, of Levin, was getting sand 1 "olf the roadside at *Koputoroa yesterday a motor-car came suddenly round a comer and collided. with the result that the oar was capsized. Mr Keith, one of the occupants, was pinned underneath, and had' a collarbone broken. At a waltzing competition -at Ohau Mr Nepia Winiat* and Miss Ransfield were declared the winners, with Mr- O. Howe and Miss Cleland a good second. During, the evening Miss Olga Nicholson sang "Home, Sweet ■ Homo" - in Maori, an item that was warmly appreciated. '■ ! , Hunting is becoming a very popular pastime in this district, and it is pleasing to see that members are entering heart and soul into the sport. On Tuesday some fifteen huntsmen followed a fast set of hounds over fine hunting country, to wit, the properties of Messrs Kupa Harvey, Ryder and 'Fairley Bros. There were numerous jumps, forty in all, which included some good obstacles, including brush and gorse doubles, etc. Seme were fairly stiff, but the horses jumped in good style, and the runs proved exhilarating. Only ono rider—Huntsman Sexton —fell, his horse striking a hurdle. . However, lie was uninjured, and took further part in the proceedings. Messrs T. O’Rourke and Hema Whata laid the drags in good style, their horses jumping well, while at the end of the second ‘check’" Mr Jack Fairley provided an ample supply of food for the hounds. After the run the followers and the several spectators, whe took much interest in the affair, were heartily entertained at afternoon tea at Bright’s theatre. A ‘‘meet’’ will be held at Mariakau on Monday next; The following week a run will be held at Waikanae, when many visiting huntsmen are expected. Mr J. Robertson, M.P. for Otaki, has decided to address the . electors at Otaki next week. ■' ■ Mr John Davies, of Koputoroa, will probably leave for Englaid shortly on a health-recuperating win, while Mr and Mrs Kilsby, of .Koputoroa, will shortly leave on a holiday trip to Vancouver. - ■
