FOREIGNERS ON LINER
ALLEGED FIGHT WITH KNIVES. CAPTAIN KENDALL DEFENDED. TORONTO, June 2. A statement published here to the effect that foreigners in the stoerage if tho Empress of Ireland fought v’th knives when their escape was barred is denied on tho authority of the Cana-dian-Pacific Company,- whoso marine superintendent says- the crew behaved splendidly, and that there was little or no panic amongst tho passengers, who seemed too dazed by the suddenness of tho accident to make any panic move.
Captain Welsh also denied Mrs Anderson’s statement that Captain Kendall was drunk when ho arrived on the Storstad. Captain Welsh says that Captain Kendall never took drink once during his life. \ NEW YORK, Juno 2.
, The newspapers are publishing scare .stories of foreigners fighting aboard, and of the crew deserting the ship and leaving the passengers to drown. They also report the story that the captain was drank, and similar untruths.
