A SUGGESTION

To the Editor “N.Z. Times.” Sir,—lt is not only amusing but very instructive to compare the attitude of the “Dominion” and other Conservative newspapers towards the Hon. Mr -Bell and the Hon. Dr (now Sir John) Findlay, both of whom occupied the same position as non-elec-tive leader of the Upper House in their respective Governments. Sir John, tired of being bull-baited by the “Dominion” and smaller fry newspapers of the party, such as the Auckland “Herald’’ and “Otago Gaily Times,” was courageous enough to submit himself to the Parnell.const*, tuencv, who, to its eternal disgrace, rejected, perhaps the most brilliant intellect and” capable politician the Dominion has' yet produced. Although the newspapers I have named axe well aware that the Hon. Mr Bell perhaps justly, on account of his ability and standing, occupies the do Ininating position in the present Government, they carefully refrain from the use of such threadbare arguments to oust him from the position, thereby showing a lack of consistency alid fair play. • _ . Will these party newspapers X have named show that love of consistency and fair play one would expect at their hands, by urging the Hon. Mr Bell to face the electors, and will the bon. gentleman woo Parnell or some equally intelligent constithenoy ? It would be a fair deal to ease his conscience by submitting himself . 101 election to the Upper House when the promised Change takes place.—l am, etc ” SQUARE DEAL.
