AUCKLAND, June 3. ' The Auckland Racing Clnh’s Great Northern Steeplechase meeting was opened at. Elierslie to-day. Heavy rain fell daring the night and throughout the day, making the going very soft and treacherous, with the result that a large number of horses fell during the afternoon. With the exception of Donzei, none of the horses or riders, were seriously hut, Donzei broke his leg and had to he destroyed. There was a large attendance, and speculation was .brisk, the sum of £33,492 10s passing' through tho totalisator, an ‘ increase of £7570 10s. on the corresponding day of last year. Results: — MAIDEN STEEPLECHASE, Of 130 so vs; about two miles and a half. 2—H. G. Dingle’s Goldbome, hj Lochneas —Pinfire, 10.9 (McFlynn) 1 5 —P. Conway’s Vestal, 9.7 (A. Gordon) 2 I—H, J. Entering the straight the first time Goldborne led from Tiri and Mapuna, and was still leading up the. hill tho second time, followed by Waterworks. Makiri her© came to grief. Goldbome led into the straight for the last time, closely followed by Waterworks and Vestal, and in a good finish won by a length and a half, with Waterworks ten lengths behind Vestal. Time, 5 min 15sec.

Te Onga was first into the straight the last time, and in, a fine finish won by three lengths fro™ Barbwire, with Rnffy four lengths! away third. Donzel broke a leg and had to be destroyed.
