AUCKLAND, June 3. ' The Auckland Racing Clnh’s Great Northern Steeplechase meeting was opened at. Elierslie to-day. Heavy rain fell daring the night and throughout the day, making the going very soft and treacherous, with the result that a large number of horses fell during the afternoon. With the exception of Donzei, none of the horses or riders, were seriously hut, Donzei broke his leg and had to he destroyed. There was a large attendance, and speculation was .brisk, the sum of £33,492 10s passing' through tho totalisator, an ‘ increase of £7570 10s. on the corresponding day of last year.
