Interviewed respecting the London .cable message stating that the Nord-deutscher-Lloyd Co. proposed to extend its operations to New Zealand, shipping men expressed a doubt as to the Story, pointing out tho fact that sihCo"tho company was only able, with a subsidy of a quarter of a million, to run a monthly service between Australia and Europe at a loss, it seemed obvious that an extension of the service to New Zealand, already served by steamers via tho Cape, was not a .commercial proposition. It was suggested. however, that the movement (may he part of the Gorman public 'policy of development of dfa deep seacarrying trado.
