ANAESTHETICS
NEW MEANS OF APPLICATION
An apparatus that is expected to prove of inestimable value to the medical profession for the administration of anaesthetics has been invented by Mr Aubrey Humphries, of Napier, who was in Wellington yesterday for the purpose of demonstrating advantages. The “analgesic outfit, as it is termed, is remarkably neat and simple, and can be used in conjunction with any anaesthetic with excellent results. Anaesthesia can he produced in all its stages and prolonged indefinitely. Analgesia is the stage which is extensively used by the dental profession, the patients being conscious hut yet free from pam during an operation. The president of the Wellington Dental Association states that the apparatus is a great advance on the methods adopted previously for admimstoring chloroform, etc. principal advantage of the invention is its extreme simplicity, for there is _ nothing that can get out of order. It is quickly and easily applied, and is entirely out of the operator’s way, leaving a clear field to work. Its extreme neat ness, lightness, and the ease with which it can be controlled make the services of an assistant entirely unnecessary. It is controlled, entirely at tli© nose, and the patient breathes fresh air direct and not through tubing. . A demonstration was given at tne Wellington hospital yesterday morning, when Dr Herbert performed- an extensive abdominal operation, this being the first time the appliance had been used for the purpose. Dr Hardwick Smith also tested it for an operation for the removal.of a large goitre. Beth these doctors were delighted with the results attained.
