Special to the “Times.” WANGANUI, May 22. The weather has been gradually improving all day, and from present appearances it should be fine for the second day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting. The acceptances received are very satisfactory, and some fine racing is promised; Play Off has been heavily supported for the opening event, the Winter Oats, but Kaniki and Gladiole should both beat him. Gladiole is very well, having thrown off her lameness, while Kaniki is in splendid form. Master Lupin and Square Deal are both engaged in the Balgownie Hack, and also the Empire Handicap, and may be reserved for the big event. In their absence, Firing Line and Kurapai will be well backed in the Hack Race. On the strength of his running in the big steeples, Riro Atu is much
[fancied for the Grandstand [for ■which Kelp will be a, starter, and [is said to be very well. Silver Morn 'jfcroh and Kauroa should be all the bet•ter for their racing yesterday, and should run well. A fine race should be witnessed. Mescal is said to be & very good jumper, and, if so, must be bard to beat in tho Rata in which Parowanui may be favourite! The race in tho Century Hurdusl should have improved Goodwin Park a good deal, but he has plenty '•weight in the May Hurdles, m which; it is said Jackman’s connections aret very confident. The gelding is none; the worse for his .effort in the steep;c-| chase, and on his form in that ever.t| ho will probably he set out favourr.el to-morrow. ArUake is a great second-; day horse, and if be shows his usual improvement to-morrow, then his hack-i ers will get a big run for their moneyTho going yesterday was all against him, and ho floundered about a lot. The Empire Handicap is generally voted-very open, and one of the beat races of the day is anticipated. First Consul is being picked out as one likely to run very prominently, while Bertrada and Goldsize are also fanciedNew York has been doing good work on the tracks, and is sure to be well supported in tho Farewell Handicap, Tho distance will suit Princess Moutoa, and she and Brunswick should ha handy at the finish.
