In legal circles Judge Cluer, of the Whitechapel County Court, London, has the reputation of being a man who dislikes magisterial levity. It must be placed on record, however, that he made a remark recently which shows that ho is by no moans devoid of a sense of humour. Regarding claims for damages, he said it seemed to bo almost a rule for claimants to say, “Ask as much as you possibly can. and if you can get a fool of • a judge to give you one-tenth of your claim you will be very well off.” Miss Elizabeth Young, Paisley, has celebrated her hundredth birthday. Born c:i March 23rd, 1811, the year before the battle of Waterloo, at Lochw nnoch, seven miles from Paisley, •Miss Y'oung has spout all her life near the village in which she was born. She has lived in the reign ci six Sovereigns. Her recollection of events fifty ~or cixty years ago is accurate and vivid, but- events of To-day are rapidly forgotten. Her deepest memories are those regarding the press gang, the Chartist riots, and the Crimean war.
