(Received Mav 20, 0.20 p.m.) BON DON, May 20. Mrs O'Shea M book discloses that Parnell’s intense passion was heightened by the cool cynicism of Parnell s comments' upon politics.
When Captain O’Shea was; returned M.P. for Clare, he. gave frequent dinners and liis hostess was piqued because Parnell ignored the invitations thereto-
She delared That she would bring him, and went to tho House and sent her card in. He eamo out and conversed with her. She dropped a rose from her bodice, and he picked iv op. Within two mouths Parnell wrote: —‘T cannot keep myself away from you any longer.” Before the year was out she, hid him in a room off hors for a fortnight, when ho composed speeches and road ‘‘Alice in Wonderland.” The Nationalists wore harrowed by the descriptions of tho sufferings which Parnell endured in tho Kilmainlium gaol.
Ho explained that he was quite comfortable, but the stories were puhlishod to stimulate Irish subscriptions and to leave the American money for other purposes. Parnell wrote in February, ISB2, that ho was glad the platform oratory had ended, because ho was disgusted with the mootings, knowing how hollow and wanting in solidity everything connected with the Irish movement was.
Mrs O’Shea- persuaded him to draft tho Kilmainham Treaty, realising tho intensity of the hate that had been let loose.
The form “Treaty of Kilmainham” was sarcastically applied to an alleged agreement between Air Gladstone's Government and Mr Parnell and oilier 1-and Beaguera imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol on October 13th, 1881. The Government was said to have entered mlw a negotiation with them while they wore there, early in Afay. 3882, about tho date of tho Phoenix Park murders.
