ROWING
WHO IS NEW ZEALAND CHAMPION, HANNAN OK. WEBB? A young New Zealander named Hannan, who has achieved some success in sculling in Australia, returned to Wellington by the Willochra from Sydney yesterday. His intention is to get a match with W. Webb, ex-cham-pion sculler of tiie world. It was understood that the title of New Zealand champion went to George Whclcli, of Akaroa, when Webb beat Towns for the world’s championship. Wlielch was later beaten by Fogwell, and a month or two ago forfeited the title to Hannan, who had challenged him. Webb, however, disputes the claim, and now Hannan has come across to row him for £IOO or £2OO a-side.
Ho brought two boats with him, and intends to train in Wellington until the match is properly arranged. When this is decided, George Towns will com© to New Zealand to prepare Hannan for the match.
